As adults, the holidays are more about spending time with family, friends, and loved ones than receiving gifts. In fact, in my family, we do a Secret Santa gift-exchange so that the focus isn’t on fighting through the massive crowds at the mall and stressing out, trying to find the perfect present for each and every family member. So, because of this, I usually don’t spend a lot of time thinking about what I want for the holidays.
But this year, I decided to go old-school, if even just for myself, and make a holiday wishlist just like when I was a kid. All but one item is under $100 and there’s a good mix of practical and fun stuff too. So if you’re still stuck trying to find the perfect gift for your impossible-to-buy-for loved one or if you’re looking for a holiday gift for yourself, check out my list!
1) Jennifer Lewis: The Mother of Black Hollywood – $17.22
Everyone who’s ever seen a Black movie or sitcom is familiar with Jennifer Lewis and her impact as our favorite Black mama. But many of us don’t know much about her story. From its excellent reviews, this book is the best of both worlds, inspiring and hilarious and I can’t wait to get it myself.
2) Conair Turbo Extreme Steam Hand Held Fabric Steamer – $55.99
I know I’m not the only one out there who absolutely hates ironing. But steaming is another ball-game, it’s actually kind of fun. This adorable steamer is not only a total time-saver, but it’s great for travel too.
3) Smoky Quartz Necklace by BlackQueerMagic – $55.00
Black Queer Magic, created by Vanessa B. Miller, is a healing crystals company with a focus on the wellness of those in the Black Queer community. She creates beautiful wrapped crystal jewelry, like this gorgeous one, and ornaments with inscriptions that challenge the gender binary. Best of all, she donates a portion of her sales to organizations that support Black Trans folks.
4) Airtight Cold Brew Coffee Maker – $18.99
Anyone who knows me knows I am a total coffee-drinker. Without my coffee, I’m a wreck. And if it’s after morning time, my coffee must be iced, no matter what temperature it is outside. This cute cold brew coffee maker is perfect for those who know that just adding ice to hot coffee doesn’t make it cold brew.
5) LCD Mini Projector, Multimedia Home Theater – $99.99
This one is a bit of a splurge, as I have no issues watching my Hulu, Netflix, and HBOGo on my laptop. But I keep hearing about how great projectors are and I have a blank wall right in front of my bed, so why not? That is, at least until I find that perfect piece of art to go there.
6) BLACK BY POPULAR DEMAND® Unisex Jersey Shirt by HGC Apparel – $46.99
What more can I say? This shirt says it all. Black will always be in popular demand. I can see myself rocking this with leggings and boots in the winter and as a sexy tee-shirt dress in the summer. Versatility (and wokeness) at its best.
7) Lady Jayne Passport Case and Luggage Tag Set – $28.99
Even though I don’t do it nearly as much as I would like, I love to travel. As I start working on my traveling goals, pretty little sets like this are a great motivation to get me going.
8) Feminist Authors Tote by Philadelphia Printworks – $25.00
This tote is PERFECT for me as an everyday reminder of all the feminist writers who came before me and have taught us all so much about true feminism. And you can never have too many totes.
9) Old Shanghai Women’s Kimono Long Robe – Chrysanthemum & Crane – $27.95
I’ve realized that I am long overdue for a grown-lady robe. What’s fancier than a silky robe? A kimono-style robe with a great flower pattern. Might as well go all out when shopping for the perfect pamper and chill accessory. I would also definitely wear this out of the house.
10) Sony DSCWX220/N 18.2 MP Digital Camera with 2.7-Inch LCD – $198.00
As those of you who follow me on Instagram know, I am in need of a new camera. I am no professional photographer so getting a $500 Cannon would be a bit over the top. That’s where this funky little gold number comes in. My favorite thing about it is that you can wirelessly upload the pictures you take into your phone or computer in minutes.
I hope you all enjoyed my list as much as I enjoyed making it. Have a great holiday and remember to have fun like you’re a kid again don’t let the holiday stress get to you!
